Chapter 9. Into the woods

Byron and Vladexa Vladivostok were using Byron’s GPS to locate and walk along the boundaries of some wooded property they had recently acquired.

“OK,” said Byron. “We’ve walked along the boundary road on the west, where we parked our car, the stream that marks the north side, and the electric fence someone put up on the east side. That leaves the south side. What does the map say makes the southern boundary?”

Vladexa looked at the map. “Well, according to the map, there should be an abandoned railroad right of way. I don’t know if the tracks are still there or not.”

They both looked around but saw nothing that looked like a railroad bed. Then a big grayish spot seemed to wobble and shimmer on the south side of the property. The spot grew bigger and turned completely black.

“What is THAT?” said Byron.

“Well, it’s not on the map,” said Vladexa.

“I feel strangely drawn to it,” said Byron.

“So do I,” said Vladexa.

Since the large black holes in space can pull in entire planets and even bend light rays into them, it is not surprising that Vladexa and Byron would be drawn to a somewhat smaller black hole on their property line. They started moving slowly and inexorably toward it.

Ms. O’Shanahanrahan had been driving for several paragraphs when Vladetta said, “Turn here. I think the property is up this road.”

“Oh, so you’ve been here before?” asked Ms. O’Shanahanrahan.

“No, never. But it’s getting pretty far along in this Uncle Bert story, and I’m sure at this point he doesn’t want us to wander around for pages and pages. I bet if I just pick a road at random, it will turn out to be the right one just to save on dialogue and narration,” explained Vladetta. She had been in several similar stories and had a general idea how they worked.

Ms. O’Shanahanrahan turned where Vladetta indicated. Soon they saw a car parked on the side of the road. “See, I was right. That’s mom’s car,” said Vladetta. “Just park behind it. If you can stay in the car with little Half-Pint here, I’ll go find Mom and ask her what this memo means.”

“Sure, I like to watch babies,” said Ms.O’Shanahanrahan. “Here’s the memo, and a pen to write down what your mom thinks it says.”

“Great, be back as soon as I can,” said Vladetta. She took the pen and the memo, and she checked her revolver to see if it was loaded. She removed the frilly parasol she had tucked into the side of the car seat next to Half-Pint. She tucked the loaded revolver into the parasol. Then she hurried off into the woods in search of her parents.

Just off the road, she found a little path. She felt sure the path would lead her to her parents because, again, it would be convenient at this point in the story to have just such a path.

The path led down into a ravine. There, sitting on a fallen tree, sat a strange man.
